My 5-Step Skin Care Routine

I know this might be hard to believe, but I did not always have great skin. Growing up as an adolescent, I struggled a lot with acne. Acne on my forehead was a norm and there was always speculation that it was because of a gel-infested fringe that I ‘rocked’ often during my school days. There is nothing I did not try as a teenager to tackle the acne. I tried toothpaste, clearing gels, and even washing my face with cold water to prevent the pimples from resurfacing.

I have had fairly good skin for about 10 years now. Lately, I only do a bushy brow and fake dramatic lashes because I wear a mask a lot during gigs. I get a lot of people assuming that I have foundation on because my skin knows how to behave.

There is nothing extra-ordinary to credit my ‘good’ skin to, however, I have not changed my skin care routine in 10 years. I have had the same skin care routine since I started being conscious about treating it a decade ago. I became conscious of taking care of it when I became a Clinique cosmetics consultant at Foschini Westgate.

What exactly did I do to maintain healthy skin?

Clinique 3-Step process

Clinique gifted their new cosmetics consultants with their 3-step skin care process after completing Beginner Training at their head office. It was a gift that cost a lot of money for me at the time. I always used drug-store face cleaners to wash my face. This would be my first time using high-end products.

The Facial Bar Soap forms part of the first step of the 3 Step process. It comes in a cute case/dish and it is fragrance free. I love this product because it is gentle on the skin yet is able to clear the skin with ease. The best part is its value for money as the soap lasts long!

If I could only pick one product to use for the rest of my life out of the 3, it would definitely be the Clarifying Lotion. This product clears away dead skin cells to create an even and smooth foundation for your moisturiser. My skin always feels lighter after using it. The cooling sensation you experience when you whisk the cotton pad across your face is my favourite part!

The last and final part of this 3-Step process is the Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion (DDML). This product is a plain Jane in terms of its appearance, but it definitely keeps its end of the bargain. The moisturiser is lightweight and hydrates throughout the day, leaving my skin feeling youthful and smooth.

I am also a huge fan of masks (not the ones we wear because of Covid-19 of course lol). I am speaking about facial cleansing masks. I use a mask once or twice a week because I have combination skin. My favourite mask has to be the Clinique City Block Purifying Charcoal Clay Mask + Scrub. This mask is the girl she thinks she is! She deep cleanses and exfoliates without leaving the skin irritated. She clears out pores and blackheads while leaving the skin clear and smooth. When the mask dries, it has a greyish-blue finish that becomes a scrub when you rinse it off. It is a two-in-one and I absolutely love it. I also use it on my boyfriend’s bearded face. Even though he won’t admit it; I think he loves it too.

Sunblock, sunblock, and more sunblock!

My mom has always believed in sunscreen and I am glad it is always been an essential in our household. I always apply sunblock, whether there is a cold front or the sun is shining bright like a diamond. My mom plugged me onto the Dermopal Moisturising Sunscreen. It is an anti-aging and anti-pigmentation sunscreen. The product feels amazing on the skin. Although it has a purple tinge, it fades as you rub it into your skin. I apply this sunscreen after applying moisturiser.

In my honest opinion, I don’t think the products are as important as maintaining a routine. More than anything, I think that is where the magic lies. Mask, cleanse, tone, moisturise and apply sunscreen. I do that every day without fail. Try it and let me know if it works for you as well.
